Tibet

Tibet remains one of the most interesting, remote and 'untouched' countries of the world. Justifiably known as 'The roof of the World', it is situated at an average elevation of 5000m (16000 ft.) above sea level.

Throughout its long history, Tibet at times has governed itself as an independent state and at other times has had various levels of association with China. Regardless of China's involvement in Tibetan affairs, Tibet's internal government was for centuries a theocracy (state governed by religious leaders), under the leadership of Buddhist lamas, or monks. In 1959 the Dalai Lama (spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism and at that time the head of Tibet's internal government) fled to India during a Tibetan revolt against Chinese control in the region. China then took complete control of Tibet, installing a sympathetic Tibetan ruler and, in 1965, replacing the theocracy with a Communist administration.

Tibet was only opened to Tourism 19 years ago. The infrastructure of the tourist industry is still very basic. However, we will guide you to the best and most suitable places, and help you organise your trip. Tibetan cuisine is not exactly the most varied in the world so it is han dy to carry anything that can be brewed with hot water such as instant coffee, drinking chocolate, tea, (bags), soup cubes, powdered milk. The currency is the Chinese Yen.

Health and altitude problems: A trip to Tibet is not for the faint-hearted. The traveling can be hard, adventurous and often unpredictable. Due to Tibet's high altitude, travelers with a history of heart, lung or anemia problems should consult a doctor before even thinking about a visit. Very rare cases of altitude sickness have been reported. Simple headache, fever, loss of appetite or stomach disorders can happen before the acclimatization. Drink approx. 3 litres of water per day, do not strain yourself, move slowly, breathe deeply and take regular rest and please do not smoke and do not drink alcohol.

Airport Tax: The Airport departure tax at present is US$12. 00 per person.
